McCaskill: Government background is must-have for auditor

Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill says her Republican opponent Al Hanson deserves respect, but that he's not qualified for the job. I'm Elizabeth Gill with the story in Jefferson City:

McCaskill says a broad, comprehensive background in state government is a must have for any state auditor. She says Hanson's emphasis on his financial background as a qualification may indicate he's unclear about the function of the job:

OutCue: "would qualify him"

McCaskill says she is proud of the work she has done in the Auditor's office since she entered into office in 1998. She says few people read or understood the audits of the past. McCaskill says her office has focused on creating credible, simplified audits that demand accountability and call for change. She disputes critics who suggest publicity has motivated her office:

OutCue: "what we do"

McCaskill is candid about public speculation that she is considering a run for governor. She says she'd love to get promoted and that her eye is on the Governor's seat in 2008.

In the meantime, McCaskill's says her focus in on reelection for State Auditor. McCaskill says although she hears little noise from her opponent's office, she is keeping a full campaign schedule and hopes she will have the chance to meet and debate Hanson before the election.
