Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes is a former reporter and editor for the Mineral Area Press and the Farmington Press-Advertiser. He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and holds a masters degree from the Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia. For nearly 20 years, he served as a communications officer and communications director of the non-partisan Missouri Senate Communications Office, where he worked with capitol press to secure computer access for reporters on the Senate floor, developed a satellite-television distance learning program linking the legislature with Missouri schools and local government channels, and set up a system to live-stream floor debate audio via the Internet. He served as both policy director and communications director for the office of Missouri treasurer, where he helped divest tax dollars from nations sanctioned as state sponsors of terrorism and develop the nation's first public investment fund screened against geopolitical and terror-related security risks. In the area of energy policy, he served as a technical advisor and policy analyst for the Missouri Public Service Commission, which uses a quasi-judicial hearing process to cap equity returns of investor-owned utilities and oversees utility reliability and safety in Missouri. A respected writer, journalist and policy analyst, Hughes has been involved in covering issues and public policy in Missouri since the early 1980s. He is a native of Missouri, and is a descendent of Jean-Baptist de la Source Thomure, who established residence in the area near what is now Ste. Genevieve nearly a century before Missouri attained statehood.
