National Guard to pay Guardsmen for recruits

Missouri is a pilot state in a new program aimed at boosting National Guard recruiting.

Dustin Blanchard has more from the state Capitol.

Missouri and four other states will launch the Guard Recruiter Assistant Program.

The program will pay existing guardsmen two-thousand dollars for every recruit they bring in who completes basic training.

The move comes as the National Guard is missing recruiting targets nationwide.

But Missouri Adjutant General King Sidwell says Missouri recruitment is on the upswing.

But, Sidwell says the Missouri Guard is still a few-hundred soldiers short of its goal.

As the Army National Guard faces recruiting shortfalls around the country, Missouri will start a new program -- paying for recruits.

Missouri and four other states will pay existing Guardsmen $2000 for every new Soldier they bring in.

Lieutenant Colonel John Fineley says the program will make his job as Missouri's chief recruiter easier.

The program will be handled through an online contractor.

Adjutant General King Sidwell says Guardsmen who are also teachers won't be eligible -- because of the conflict of interest.
