Mild flu season follows vaccination shortage

The flu panic of the fall has subsided. Meghan Kloth has more from Jefferson City.

The flu season is more than half over and is shaping up to be more moderate than last year. There are only 600 reported flu cases so far this year, or one-third the number at this time last year. Sue Denny is with the Department of Health and Senior Services.

"Well, compared to last season it is a very mild season. Season to date, at this time last season, we had 16,308 laboratory confirmed cases, so it was a much more active season.

Denny said she doesn't know why cases are down this season. One explanation may be that people have developed a natural immunity. From the capitol, I'm Meghan Kloth

The first half of the flu season has been more moderate compared with last year. Now in the peak of the season, the number of cases has gone up. Last week, the number of reported cases was higher than the number of cases from the same time last year.

"Last week was the biggest week we've had this year, and we were really starting to see a decline by this time last year."
