Lincoln County Democratic Representative Wayne Henke's bill would send profits from fee offices to local school districts.

The bill would also remove the Governor's power to appoint fee officers.

The law would allow for competitive bidding for those posts.

House Speaker Rod Jetton says the current system keeps the governor accountable.

Contents: "The folks that set the state up designed it that way b/c I think they knew if a governor wasn't putting good people in those fee offices, and they were doing a bad job it would reflect bad on him and he would lose votes, so you almost have that system of accountability in there to make sure those are run in a positive way."

Fee offices collect money for driver's licenses, motor vehicle titles and registrations, and tax payments.

Current law allows fee officers to keep any profits from fee collections.

House Democrats have proposed a bill that would send all profits made from fee offices to local schools.

The bill would also end the Governor's power to appoint fee officers, opening the posts to competitive bidding.

Democrats, like House Minority Leader Jeff Harris, say the offices have been used to reward campaign contributors, and are out-of-step with modern times.
