State Capital Bureau

Senator John Dolan announced a unusual plan for getting tough on enforcing the use of seat belts. Evan Godt (Got) has more from Jefferson City.

Dolan wants to make not wearing a seat belt a punishable offence without having to connect it to another violation.

Currently, Missourians can only be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt if they are pulled over for some other reason first.

Dolan, the chairman of the Joint Committee on Transportation Oversight, wants to attach this seat belt law with another controversial proposal; making the use of helmet on motorcycles voluntary. By connecting the laws, he believes he can reach a comprimise toget it to pass in the next session.

Actuality:

Contents: We will pass this simple issue, this is not medicaid taxes and budgets and school funding formulas, red, blue, marriage and all that. It shouldn't be that difficult.

Dolan wants the punishment for not wearing a seat belt to be a $15 fine with no points on a driver's license.

From the state Capitol, I'm Evan Godt.
