The Missouri Department of Transportation said uniform speed limits for both cars and large trucks are safe for Missouri highways. David Ferrucci has more from Jefferson City.
The chief spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Transportation said allowing large trucks to travel the same speed as passenger cars does not increase highway fatalities.
This counters the statement Illinois Transportation Secretary Timothy Martin made earlier this week. Martin said highway crashes involving large trucks increased by more than 70 percent the year after the Missouri legistlature raised speed limits in 1996.
However, MoDOT spokesperson Jeff Briggs said that data shows that was an exception.
Briggs said highways are safer when traffic is moving at the same rate of speed.
From the state capital, I'm David Ferrucci.
