MoDOT director to resign

The much maligned director of MoDOT announced his resignation today. Aidian Holder has the details.

Henry Hungerbeeler has presided over MoDOT during tough times, as Missouri roads deteriorated and the department was blamed for breaking promises to the public and squandering tax money. His resignation today comes after a scathing report by an independent panel said MoDOT needed to make major changes in its senior managment in order to regain its credibility with the public.

In his resignation letter, Hungerbeeler acknowledged the need for a change in MoDOT's leadership, but in person he defended his tenure at the department.

MoDOT Director Henry Hungerbeeler says he's going to resign after a five year stint at the head of the department. As Aidian Holder reports, Hungerbeeler's term was marked by acrimony, budget woes, and deteriorating roads.

Hungerbeeler has been a lightining rod for criticism. His resignation comes after a scathing report by an independent panel said MoDOT needed major changes in its management in order to regain credibility with the public.

Hungerbeeler seems at times to be universally despised . . . a convinent wipping boy for whatever ails MoDOT. Reacting to the announcment, Governor Holden shed no tears for Hungerbeeler, saying it was time for new leadership at MoDOT.

But even some of his most vocal critics, like former Senator Morris Westfall, a member of the panel whos report lead to Hungerbeeler's resignation, said MoDOT's problems go deeper than one person.
