State Suffers Setback in School Desegregation

State efforts to at a negotiated settlment to the state's school desegregation cases have failed...leading to state vows to go back to the courts. Candyce Clifft has the story from Jefferson City:

After six months of negotiations, it was Missouri's governor's who proclaimed failure in seeking a settlement in the Kansas City case.

Pressure for a negotiated settlement had grown after the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Missouri in its arguments against paying a part of the desegregation costs.

The governor's chief of staff is Marc Farinella:

Farinella did not rule out further negotiations on a settlement.

But in the meantime, the governor issued a written statement vowing that the state will resumes its court battles to stop state funding for school desegregation.
