Blunt says he wants to clean up polls on Election Day

October 31, 2002

State Capital Bureau

Secretary of State Matt Blunt is asking voters to help clean up the election process. I'm Elizabeth Gill with the story in Jefferson City:

Blunt is asking Missouri citizens to be aware of voting fraud on Election Day. People commit fraud if they intentionally send unregistered voters to the polls. Blunt also says it is illegal to help others fill out their absentee ballots if the voter does not understand which candidate they are voting for. Blunt says he wants to avoid the chaos of election day 2000:

Secretary of State Matt Blunt says he wants to end election fraud. I'm Elizabeth Gill with the story in Jefferson City:

People commit voting fraud when they intentionally send unregistered voters to the polls. It's also illegal to assist voters who are not clear on which candidate they are voting for. And people who offer money to encourage others to vote can face up to a year in prison in addition to a 25 hundred dollar fine.

Blunt says he is not trying to discourage legitimate votes, just voter fraud. He says the changes he has brought to the voting process have made it easier than ever for Missourians to cast their ballots:

Blunt says he wants to avoid the chaos that he says put Missouri second to Florida in terms of problems during the last presidential election. From the state capitol, I'm Elizabeth Gill.
