House Republicans didn't voice objection when it came time to give first round approval to the Tobacco Trust Fund legislation.

But there was an attempt by Republican Catherine Hanaway to tack on a provision that would let the legislature appropriate tobacco settlement money without a vote of the people.

That would allow the money to be subject to the Hancock Amendment and then the money would be refunded to Missourians.

Hanaway's proposal failed to gain approval.

Instead, the House approved the bill setting up the Tobacco Trust Fund as a mechanism to collect the money that could begin coming into the state as early as next month.
