September 19, 2000
By: Seth Bachelier
State Capital Bureau

This is Seth Bachelier for Missouri Capital Caucus.

Lawmakers budgeted eight million dollars towards the restoration of the Capitol Building.

The state's Director of Design and Construction Randall Allen says the project will go beyond solving structural problems.

RunTime: 24 seconds
OutCue: "it is now."
Contents: The restoration process will include the painting of ceilings, improved lighting, cleaning of marble surfaces and improved side galleries in the House and Senate chambers. After completion, the Capitol will be better than before the restoration began.

Allen says the Americans with Disabilities Act is not the driving force behind the construction.

But, he says all renovations will comply.

RunTime: 9 seconds
OutCue: "are to narrow."
Contents: Allen says the Americans with Disabilities Act is a factor in all the construction team does. For example, many of the doors in the Capital are too narrow.

Near the narrow doors, workers paint ceilings that were not completed when the Capitol was built in 1917.

Job Superintendent Don Osborne says after the paint dries workers apply real gold leaf.

RunTime: 11 seconds
OutCue: "gold plus alloys."
Contents: Leafing is gluing thin sheets of gold or other metals to the ceiling then painting over them to produce a good image.

Construction workers say other than occasional strong winds, the restoration process hasn't encountered any major problems.

Officials also say construction should be finished by the end of this year.
