Jay Nixon endorses Bill Bradley for president

JEFFERSON CITY - U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley has picked up his second endorsement from a statewide Missouri official.

On Monday, Attorney General Jay Nixon announced his endorsement of the Missouri native's campaign for the Democratic nomination for president.

"We think Bill Bradley needs to be American's next president," Nixon said.

Earlier, Secretary of State Bekki Cook had endorsed Bradley and volunteered time for his Iowa caucus campaign.

Sen. Steve Stoll, from Bradley's native Jefferson County, and Sen. Jim Mathewson, D-Sedalia, joined Nixon in his press conference to endorse Bradley.

Nixon said he chose Bradley because of his commitment to campaign contributions. He also mentioned that Bradley's roots played a part in his decision.

"When the campaign comes to Missouri its favorite son is running for president," Nixon said.

Nixon joins 34 other Missouri state officials who have chosen to support Bradley.

However, Missouri's top Democrat -- Gov. Mel Carnahan -- said Monday he will not endorse a candidate in the primary.

State Auditor Claire McCaskill has endorsed Al Gore.

State Treasurer Bob Holden, who is running for governor, and Lt. Gov. Roger Wilson have not yet announced a position.

Missouri will host its presidential primary on March 7, along with 10 other states.

Local Democratic Representatives Chuck Graham, Vicky Riback-Wilson and Ted Farnen have jumped on the Bradley bandwagon.

"Sen. Bradley brings a new breath of fresh air to the campaign," Farnan said. "People think he's very sincere and he would be someone you could trust to be president."

Farnan said he thinks both Vice President Al Gore and Bradley are two good candidates. One reason Farnan supports Bradley is also because of his close ties to Missouri.
