Partial birth abortions banned

February 12, 1997
By: Naomi Smith

State Capital Bureau Anti-abortion supporters are one step closer to banning partial birth abortions in Missouri. Naomi Smith has the story from Jefferson City.

The Senate Judiciary Committee overwhelmingly passed a bill to ban partial birth abortion procedures. Partial birth abortion, also called D & X or D & E, is an abortion in which fetuses 20 weeks to 40 weeks old are delivered then killed after a partial delivery.

Committee chair John Schneider says the bill prohibits deliberately killing babies that are already born.

Actuality:"procedure is atrocious"

Governor Carnahan says Missouri law already prohibits partial birth abortions and that the bill is political.
